[Kyuu Shimo yoichi Unjouya]
Herring fishing began in the Edo era. The Yoichi fisherman's tax office is the only existing one in Hokkaido. It has been restored on the basis of the 1853 plans, and has been designated an Important National Cultural Property.

[Kyuu Yoichi Hukuhara Gyojou]
You can see the heyday of herring fishing in the fisherman's compound, which consists of the main house, an archive for books & documents, a storehouse for rice & miso, and a shed for fishing nets. |

Yoichi Fishery Museum displays the history of herring fishing and people's way of life in the old days.

[Fugoppe Grotto]
Fugoppe Grotto was discovered by a junior high school student in 1950. Prehistoric petroglyphs of the late Jomon period can been seen there, along with ancient pottery,tools made from animal bones and horns, and fireplaces.

[EBISU iwa,DAIKOKU iwa]
*iwa=rock
These 2 rocks are called "EBISU iwa" and "DAIKOKU iwa" because the shapes of the rocks look very much like the Japanese gods who have the same names.
EBISU and DAIKOKU are members of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune,and are both gods of wealth. In the past merchants
used to put these gods in their shops and pray for good business every morning. |

[ROSOKU iwa(Candle rock)]
This rock has been called"ROSOKU iwa"(Candle rock) for many years becaouse it looks like a ROSOKU(a candle).
It rises 46m from the sea.
Owing to such an unusual shape, ROSOKU iwa is one of the most popular scenic spots in Yoichi, and there are many legends surrounding this rock.

[Yoichi Space Museum]
This museum which is also called the "Space Dome" was opened in 1998 to commemorate Mamoru Mohri, from Yoichi who boarded the Space Shuttle "Endeavor" as the first Japanese scientist in September 1992.
The museum has been playing an important role in the towm's tourism, and an educational facility and you can enjoy a simulated outer-space experience there with spectacular audio-visual effects which make full use of state-of the art technology.

[Nikka Whisky]
Masataka Taketsuru, the founder of the Nikka Whisky Distilling Co,Ltd., studied the art of making whisky in Scotland. After returning to Japan with his wife Rita, he established a distillery in Yoichi in 1934. He considered the natural conditions here to be similar to those in Scotland.
The Nikka Whisky has been developed into one of the leading whisky companies in Japan and the Yoichi Distillery has played a central role in tourism in Yoichi for a long time. You can learn about the history of whisky in the museum of the distillery.
